Tis is the Season

Indeed the blog has been on a hold for awhile...because the team has been away on a their first ever overseas trip to KL! Apologies for no updates as wireless was not present over there.

But on the positive note, all are back safe and sound and reached back Singapore at 3:30pm today after a good 4 days 3 nights at KL. There was good experiences, bad experiences and there was also good fun. But one thing is for sure is that the team would not want a 2nd experience of a bad and mad muddy soccer field! It sure did annoyed everyone who got badly mud-soaked and smelly perhaps.

The end of this trip also signals the end of this season and that's a wrap, no more trainings till the new year comes around!

Pictures from the trip would be up in the next post so check back this space!

POL-ITE 2008: Thus far

Very well, the POL-ITE games has begun and first up, Team Republic Women's Soccer team faced up against ITE. Not too bad for a start, as Yatie scored first to put the team ahead first before ITE could equalized. A very pretty goal that went over the keeper and into the net and Team Republic was up 1-0.

Last year, ITE put 11 goals past Team Republic and this year, the score was cut down drastically to just 5 goals! Also, the very first time that Team Republic has scored against ITE first. So full time and RP lost out 1-5.

2nd game, was against Singapore Polytechnic, the team that debuted in the POL-ITE in the same time as Team Republic did. In this game, Singapore Polytechnic was beaten 2 goals to nil with the courtesy of Yattie who once again, grabbed both goals! Also did we mention that there a pair of sisters who were against each other in the match? Yes, that is Dilys of Team Republic and Delia of Singapore Polytechnic! Sadly we do not have a picture of them clashing in action.

3rd game was against Ngee Ann Polytechnic who seemed to have strengthened team this year. They have a very tall striker who has scored 8 goals in all so far, with most of them coming from free kicks and corners! Female C.Ronaldo/David Beckham? After the final whistle, it was Ngee Ann Polytechnic who walked away as winners, putting 5 goals past Team Republic.

Team Republic will be up against their last and final opponent, Nanyang Polytechnic on the 24th Oct, come Friday, 6pm. Let's hope for the best and if the team wins Nanyang Polytechnic in this game, they will finish the competition 3rd!

Results from the other matches:
1) 14th Oct : SP 0 NP 8
2) 17th Oct: NYP 0 NP 8
3) 21st Oct: NYP 1 ITE 8

Some pictures from the matches:

Congratulations to Yatie once again for scoring all 3 goals and well done Team Republic, keep the fire burning!

Youth League 2008 round up

Team Republic lost 0-6 to Kaki Bukit SC in their last game. Dilys, captain of the match is seen marking Ayu of Kaki Bukit SC on the left. Did we also mention that Aileen almost got a goal! Was so close!

Next up, they have the annual POL-ITE which starts on the 13th October. The schedule is as follows:

14th Oct: RP vITE, 6pm
17th Oct: RP v SP, pm
21st Oct: RP v NP, 8pm
24th Oct: RP v NYP, 6pm

Before the POL-ITE, like the previous year, the team is also having a 2D1N training camp over the weekend which will get them prepared and tougher for the annual inter polytechnic-ITE competition! Also, there is a team building session for the team today and let's hope that this will foster greater team cohesion in the team !

Here comes the festive!

It's been a month of fasting for all musilms out there and finally, come tomorrow, it is the day where they get to fast no more!

Today or rather these 2 weeks mark the preparations for the great festive, where there is family and friends visiting from house to house, collection and the giving of green packets take place. Not to forget the baking and cooking of all the yummilcious food and cookies and kuihs to feed the mouth/s! All that delicious water-dripping food...

This whole upcoming October month will definitely be a very hectic month for the team, while they have 2 days off training for festive celebration or (just break time for the non-musilms). On Friday, the team resumes training for usual preparation for their last Youth League match the following day against Kaki Bukit, before calling it a day for their first ever Youth League participation. Come 13th October will be the annual POL-ITE games involving all polytechnics and 1 combined Institute Technical Education school.

While it has been a year since the last POL-ITE where the team finished fourth, the team is ever more more determined this time round to deliver a medal! It's time to show what the team is made of this 2nd time around!

In the mean time, Team Republic Women's Soccer Team blog would like to wish all musilms out there a Selamat Hari Raya in advance!

Update scores from the Youth League:
  • Team Republic 0 - 7 NYP Graduate Alumni
  • Team Republic 0 - 6 Singapore American School 'A'
  • Team Republic 0 - 4 Singapore American School 'B'
Definitely not looking very ideal but with that being said, this is Team Republic's first ever participation the Youth League, which makes it their first ever major competition. There is much more to build up on and learn on the way, so let's go Team Republic!

Off the field, congratulations to both Celine and Dilys for making the honors roll! Well done to both and continue to strive in your results!

Team Republic will face Ang Mo Kio United 'B' in their next match come 13th September at their very own astro turf, 1930h.

Over here, Aileen takes on an SAS 'A' player in the recent game on 30th August.

Pesta Sukan 2008

The team took part in the annual Pesta Sukan 7 a side for the 2nd year running just yesterday. As per usual, the venue took place over at Singapore American School.

The team did pretty well and delivered satisfying results though they were just short of a placing to qualify to the next round. They were grouped with their league rivals and here are the results:

  • Sporting Westlake 1 - 1 Republic Polytechnic
  • SAS 'A' 0 - 0 Republic Polytechnic
  • NTU 3 - 0 Republic Polytechnic
  • SAS 'C' 0 - 1 Republic Polytechnic
Well done, Team Republic. Indeed, they have shown some great games there, holding a draw against Sporting Westlake and SAS 'A'. Congratulations to Shasha who grabbed both goals for Team Republic!

Also congratulations to 2007/2008 Premier League champions, Young Women who once again grabbed the title of this year's Pesta Sukan!

and...It's a draw

The team managed to get a point off the game against re-named team Ngee Ann Arion. They were previously known as Ngee Ann Polytechnic but has since revamped the team name. After 90 minutes, the score was at 0-0. This is a good start for the team as they now have a point for themselves!

Let's get the good start going!

Youth League: Updates

Here are the scores from the previous games:

Sporting Westlake 8
Republic Polytechnic 0

National University of Singapore 2
Republic Polytechnic 0

The team did put up a good fight against NUS and could almost put the score to just 1-0 but was unfortunate to have them adding the 2nd goal at the last minute.

Today, the team travels to Clementi Stadium to play their POL-ITE opponent, Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Faz said, "This is like a POL-ITE preview!"

Indeed, a preview and let's go, Team Republic!

1st Youth League match

As we've mentioned in the previous post that Team Republic's women soccer team was up against their sparring counterparts, U-19. Last night, they were decked out in their 2nd blue strip while Team Republic was decked out in their new green tops with black shorts and black socks.

The team got defeated in their first match, losing 0-6 but nevertheless, the Team Republic fighting spirit will never cease! Next up, the team faces Sporting Westlake FC.

Kick off time: 5pm
Venue:
Team Republic's Astro Turf @ Sports Complex

Off to the hoops and rings!

Just right after training last Friday, the team went to catch their fellow Team Republic Women's Basketball team in their finals for the POL-ITE! It was down to win it or get third. The Women's basketball team faced off with the strong ITE and came back 3 times to equalize the score, it was whoa, just fantastic and indeed, the Team Republic fight-back spirit. It was a very highly anticipated game, with plenty of free throws given, plenty of fouls and plenty of non-stop cheering and blowing of air-horns from fans from both sides. One could have gone deaf with those loud air-horns!

The soccer girls definitely took time out to watch and cheer on their fellow counterparts, hoping they'd retain the title and win it on home ground but unfortunately, they fell short and lost by 4 points. So this year's champion is ITE and Team Republic's women basketball team finished 3rd.

Here we see Jacqueline of Team Republic in blue up against her opponent.

Once again,

Congratulations to the team for putting up such a good fight and show for the match!

Friendlies and rest

Today marks the 2nd day of the 3 and a half days of break from training for the team.

They had a friendly last Saturday against one of the better ITE teams, ITE Simei and lost out 1-4. Shasha got the equalizing goal in the 21st minute before ITE Simei replied within minutes and added in another 2, 1 coming in in the latter first half and the last one in the second half. Team Republic had many chances and were close on many occasions but were just unfortunate. But nonetheless, the team's play is definitely getting better as the weeks go by. Most players will still be rotated around to play in various positions as coach Faz is trying to get each player to be versatile.

As for this week, training for the team will resume only on Wednesday and below is the schedule for the week:

Wednesday & Friday: Training
Saturday : Friendly with NTU, 1600h.

Also, the team will be participating in their first ever major tournament (other than the annual POL-ITE) , the Women's Youth League in the latter part of this month, about 2 weeks from now! First up, they will be facing the 'B' team of Arion Women FC on the 26th July over at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

Let's hope this tournament will help the team in preparation for their annual POL-ITE as the team aims to finish top 3 this time!

U-19, Bishan Arsenal and more..

It's been about a week since the friendly with Bishan Arsenal. No doubt Bishan Arsenal was a way better team as they are one of the Women's Premier League contenders. They have a team of good players who have plenty of experience who put about 9 goals past the team.

Moving on... the team started training with the National U-19 squad just yesterday. The training focused more on players' stamina and fitness as they ran a total of 16 rounds round the field (with a break down of 6, 4, 4 and 2) with about 2-3 minutes break in between. The training concluded with 2 side game

With effect from 4th June, the team will train together with the National U-19 squad on every Wednesday and Friday, under coach Naplah.

Hopefully the team will be able to learn more and become better as the weeks go by!

On the 21st May 2008, Republic Polytechnic hosted their very own annual Glitz Awards (which is also known as the Sports Awards) at their very own Theatre of Dreams, the Sports Complex.

Among the list of the night's awardees were 8 of Team Republic's Women Soccer players who were awarded Meritorious Silver, Certificate of Merit and Sports for Good respectively:

Meritorious Silver:
Irna
Dilys
Marjory

Certificate of Merit:
Bernice
Iffa
Ili
Catherine
Nas

RP 'Sports for Good':
Dilys

Also, Marjory was one of the 5 nominees for Female Captain of the Year and in the event, she was crowned Female Captain of the Year! Not to forget the team's 3 coaches who were also awarded for their efforts. Namely Faz, Ahad and Razali, who took much patience in grooming the team!

A team photo for the Glitz Awards night:

and did we mention that "Mcfly" was among us during that night? Well, yes, indeed, they were among us in their all-black and white suit HOWEVER, they are the female version of Mcfly! Perhaps soon, someday they will become the 2nd generation of Mcfly and make it big!

There they are, the "Mcfly"!

So once again, a huge Congratulations to all award winners and hopefully the team soon gets onto the list of Team of The Year for next year's Glitz!

With thanks to Farhana for the photos from the event :)

Hi Monika Staab!

Earlier this evening, the team had an hour and a half of soccer clinic held by the 2007 WWC's Champions, Germany's ex coach, Monika Staab. She is currently working with FIFA, traveling around to do a global development for women's soccer. She's currently here in Singapore, working with the Football Association here to assist in their development in the women's soccer as well. More of her profile can be found here. Though it was quite a brief session, the team sure have enjoyed the fun session. There was the see-who-can-grab-the-most-number-of-bibs game while each move around with their own ball which was the one where everyone enjoyed the most. The session ended with some overlap shooting and a 4 v 4.

It sure is a good session for the team as well, working back on their basics, which is what a football player needs. Being equipped with the basics for football is the most essential for anyone who wants to play football.

So, as per usual, the team had a team photo together with Monika before she left:
Once again, Thank You Monika for the fun session!

Against the Law

What a way to break the Law under a scorching Sunday afternoon!

If you thought the team really did break some law, you've been fooled! Truth is, the team had a friendly against team Law Society just yesterday, winning it 5-2! The goals came in from four players namely - Yatie who grabbed 2, Shasha, Yi Wen and Bernice. It's good to have the goals pouring in from the midfielders, eh?

It sure was an emphatic win for the team, having won by such a scoreline for the very first time (since the last match of POL-ITE 2007, thrashing newcomers SP 4-1). Despite the fact that it was played on bad combination of bad ground and hot sun, they managed to pull it altogether and make a big win for themselves! The team is sure great, even under the sun! Not to mention that the team has been already training on artificial grass for about a couple of weeks now...

Next up, the team will be having a try-out session come 30th April, Wednesday. Let's see if there will be some good talent spotted!

SLA Fiesta: Pictures Time!

As mentioned, here's how the booth looks like! Half of the soccer field, with all the drawn-up soccer balls, the couple soccer player on each side of the post..

Well, so far into the 2nd day of the SLA Fiesta event, the sport itself has collected a number of guys' name (needless to say) and a few girls' name.

For each girl that comes to the booth to check out the sport group or comes to sign up, they are given a little gift that is kindly and carefully made by the team. Last year was candies and an info-flyer but this year's one is smaller but more interesting! They are given a cloth-peg, in the colors of Republic Polytechnic, together with a drawn up soccer ball and lastly, a small little info piece that is clipped onto it!

It has definitely taken plenty of sacrificed hours from some of the team to do up all this cute little souvenirs but let's hope that it is not thrown away down the bin!

SLA Fiesta

The new year and new term has begun and in recent weeks, the girls have been preparing for the SLA Fiesta, also known as the Student-Life Activities Fiesta. Each Sports/Interest Group are given a booth and they can do whatever they like to their booth, so as to attract the new students to join them.

As for the Soccer girls, they've done up half a soccer field in their booth with the green fragile crease paper for the grass, some cardboard to make up the corner flag poles and goal posts and also raffia strings to make up the goal net! On top of that, to finish it off, the team added some drawn-up soccer balls and a couple soccer player that was placed on the panel as well. It sure did impress some audience though!

More pictures to come!

Turf's up!

After 3 months since December, the field is finally up and back in vibrant green! Of course, this time it's going to be a good turf because it's artificial grass which means be it light rain or shine, the team can use the field without any worries of mud going on their faces or attire or legs! It's about a few weeks away before the field is completely done and at last, the team will be training on new grass...

Monthly Fitness

After the recent 2-1 friendly victory over Meridian JC, the team has been informed that they will have a beep test taken at the end of every month to keep track of their fitness level. The first beep test starts as of today and no one is to miss it, even as for the upcoming ones. This will definitely benefit everyone as it will not only ensure that they have good fitness but also ensure that they are always ready for any friendlies and be physically ready for any long endurance runs.

In another 2 days' time, the team will be taking a combination of Physical and Technical test. Let's hope that everyone will be well prepared and do well for it!

Fitness and more fitness

It has definitely been a great holiday and semester break for the team in the last December, while some prepare for Christmas, some enjoying the holidays and perhaps enjoying the last of 2007. But before calling it yet another year, the team returns back for off the field physical training to regain back any fitness lost and also to work on their body posture and movement, balance and speed.

While the team works hard on their fitness at the moment, their field goes underway for a 3-month overhaul! By mid March, the team will be kicking on a brand new synthetic field, glistening with light! That would serve as a huge relief to the team, as they would have to worry less about getting all covered and soaked in the brown soil each time when there is a downpour.

It's only 4 days away before everyone returns back to school for yet another last 4 weeks! It will be yet another daily grueling routine but with soccer trainings within the week as well, it should spice up the school days.

Lastly, Team Republic's WST blog would like to wish everyone a very belated Happy New Year!
