POL-ITE 2014

Wow wow so the blog has been dead for a year but fret not, we are back! We've been active on our twitter and instagram but not so on the blog and we are so sorry about it.

Let's start off this blog revival by saying that...

WE ARE POL-ITE 2014 CHAMPIONS!

Scores from the matches as below:

27 Oct, RP 3 TP 1 (Scorers - Mo, Siti, Aqilah)
30 Oct, RP 4 NYP 1 (Scorers - Mo, Siti, Aqilah x 2)
6 Nov, RP 2 ITE 0 (Scorers - Azima, Faezah)
13 Nov, RP 3 SP 0 (Scorers - Faezah x 2, Siti)

Here are some thoughts from our players...

As a year three, I just feel like it all came to an end too fast. It's like I just set foot into republic poly and now I'm all set for graduation in a few months time. Every moment in Rpwst has been precious to me. All the values and morals I learned in this team will follow me a long way in life. This last season with the team has been a bitter-sweet journey, leaving the team as a senior and winning the title for the third consecutive time in a row  :')

Lastly, I want to proudly say that the future of RPWST looks bright as I hand over something close to my heart to a group of girls with vast leadership qualities in them. All the best girls.
One heart, one team, one goal. One team republic.

- Yashvini, Year 3

--

Our hard work and trainings had paid off for all the 4 matches as we managed to get all the 12 points and clinched the title again for the third time in a row. We wouldn't have done it without Coach Arasu, Coach Siva, Faz, the alumni and the team.

Every team has their struggles and downfalls and we've had a fair share of them. We knew the journey to the championship wasn't going to be an easy one. The championship title wasn't going to be handed to us. We knew we had to work hard for it and that's exactly what we did. Rain or shine,
we trained hard giving our all for every training whether it was a long 2 hour session or just a brief 30 minutes workout. What kept the fire burning was knowing that our Alumni left a legacy behind and we weren't just going to leave it to be remembered, we knew we had to uphold the legacy of champions and inspire the next generation of RPWST player, just as how they have done for us.

Our determination, perseverance and hunger had led us to win the Championship.

- Faiezah and Jules, Year 2

4 matches, 12 points, 12 goals, 1 team, 1 Trophy!

What a great season it has been yet again. 3rd time Champion back to back and we can't ask for more. Indeed a great way to end the season and as December is here, it is time to take a break before the players return to training next year with new players joining the team while the year 3s would be graduating in the first quarter of next year and with some players returning to their clubs to prepare for the Women's Premier League next season.

Hopefully the seniors or outgoing players have left a legacy behind and that this legacy would continue down the years.

Thank you to the Coaches Arasu and Siva, Advisor Faz, the supporters, the parents of the players and last but not least, the alumni who came down to watch and support their juniors. Nothing would be possible without the tough fitness and field trainings.

Don't forget to follow us on our twitter @rpwst and our instagram @rpwst !

The Alumni in the National Colors

Hello, hello! It's been awhile since we last login. As usual, we have good news to bring. What better news is there than having an alumni who got selected to put on National Colors in this sport dominated by men? We had an email interview a couple of months back, of 5 questions with our alumni, Azhmeera Shasha, who shared with us on her experience of being on the National Team and getting her first cap. Nurjannah was also selected but she wasn't available for our interview. Yes, it is a delayed post.

Shasha (bottom row, 2nd from left) and Nurjannah (bottom row, 1st from right),

Photo: FAS

Congratulations on your selection for the Women National Team! What was your first reaction when you were informed of your selection?

Azhmeera Shasha:
I was just curious of the upcoming plan as there wasnt any call up in a long time. Thus, together with my team mates from my former club, Jollilads Arsenal, we went to the meeting to listen to the plan that have been set.

Provide us a sneak peek of life as National Team squad player.
AS:
As a national player, we train almost everyday. From building up our strength in the gym to fitness to tactical play in the field. We have friendly with the boys team and some international friendly.

You were in the starting 11 for the match against North Bangkok FC in the recent training trip to Thailand. Were you more nervous or excited to be in the starting line-up?
AS: The friendly in Thailand was just an exposure for us. There wasn't a confirmed alot of first 11 in the team yet. Everyone was doing their best to get a spot in the starting line-up. Being in the first 11, I wasn't really nervous as I've played with the Thai team before in the recent AUG (Asian University Games) team. I know their standard and I was prepared for it. So I was rather confident to give a good fight.

There are so many female players and young girls who harbor hopes to be selected for the National Team and aspire to represent their country. What advice/s do you have for these group of female players?
AS:
Football is a beautiful game but sometimes people makes it ugly. As a player, not only we must build our skills but we must build our character as well.

Lastly, with the annual POL-ITE Football competition coming up, do you think your juniors at RP would be able to retain their title? Else, who do you think would be the Champions?

AS:
I may not know what is the POL-ITE level of play now, as previously, when I  was a poly student, it was a tough competition with great players around. However, being a former RP player as well as the vice-Captain, there is no doubt that my ultimate support will always be with them. And that, we wish them all the best to give a good football show while retaining the title.

So that's all we have! Do check back our blog for some POL-ITE post next and Happy Thanksgiving!

A game against Fandi Ahmad

How often do you get to play against your own local legend soccer player like Fandi Ahmad? The man who was signed by FC Groningen then in 1983 and became famous among the fans with his goals.

Well, our graduates, Sarah, Immy, Jannah and Ernie got their chances. They played in a friendly for a club called h20 Women's Dream Team against the ITE Men's Alumni, which also consisted of Fandi Ahmad himself.

What a (memorable) day it is for the graduates!

Glitz 2013

Then again, another year has gone by and here we are at this year's Glitz 2013, also known as the annual Sports Awards.

This year, many of the players picked up awards in the meritorious categories and the highlight of the night was our Captain's double nomination in (Female) Captain Of The Year and Sportswoman Of The Year, in which she won the title of Sportswoman of The Year!

What a wonderful bonus for the team for being nominated for Team Of The Year (TOTY) but was closely edged out by the Tchoukball (Female) Team! Apart from that, the team was brought home the 'Sports for Good' award.

Congratulations to the following players who received their awards in the respective categories and a huge Congratulations to the Captain for her double award:

All in all, it was yet another great year and a great evening for the team and for the new members of the team who attended and experienced their first ever Sports Award Night, or should we say, Glitz 2013.

Till then, fingers crossed that the team would work towards being nominated for TOTY again next year and hopefully mark their name on that title!

CCA Fiesta 2013

Wow, it has been almost half a year since we last updated you with some news! Now we are back! We have Samira, who writes in to share on what happened during this year's CCA Fiesta:

Some of the players, together with a few of the male counterparts, come together for a photo at their booth.

Recently, we had a CCA Fiesta, which was held on the 24 and 25 April. The event was a showcase of the different interest groups (IG), who showed what they had to offer to the freshmen who are looking to join any of the interest groups. All the sports IGs were located in the South Agora Hall and again, we shared the same booth with our male counterparts.

We sacrificed our break time to give full support to promote our IG and even our graduated seniors such as Shank, Sarah, Immy and Mag came back to help us out. We are thankful for their assistance!

The atmosphere was chaotic but fun at the same time. We managed to get a rough estimation of 70 freshmen who signed up with us and we hope that they would make it to the try-out sessions which would be held on 7 and 14 May 2013. We hope to see you then!

That is all we have for you now! Remember to follow us on our twitter (@rpwst) and tweet us your experience if you were there for either of the try-out sessions!

U.S/Singapore Soccer Exchange Programme

Words contributed by Natasha Mustika

Just a week ago, 4 former U.S. Women International soccer players namely Janine Szpara, Anna Shortt, Karen Willoughby and Val Henderson flew into Singapore to conduct soccer clinics for women soccer players in the US/Singapore Soccer Exchange Programme.

The Exchange is part of the U.S. Embassy’s broader sports diplomacy initiative to foster greater mutual understanding between the youth of the United States and Singapore. Working with Football Association of Singapore (FAS), the program is specifically tailored for girls to promote women’s empowerment through sports and inspire them through activities such as soccer.

The RPWST girls were involved in the clinic and needless to say, it was a fun-filled and enjoyable programme for them as they gained new knowledge and insights from the 4 of the former US International soccer players.

The clinic for the polytechnic girls was to be held on the 6 December however, heavy rain dampened the spirits and there was no chance for the girls to even step on the field. Throughout the two hour session, the team had the opportunity to interact with the 4 Coaches and within the short session, all the participants gathered in a room where they were taught the importance of problem solving and awareness of their surrounding through playing simple ice breaking games.

After the session ended, the girls were disappointed that they did not have the chance to strip down to their soccer boots and learn from the coaches however, they were told that they could instead join in another session with the American school participants on the coming Saturday.

While the Saturday's session was held early in the morning, it was all worth it. Everyone had fun learning from the different coaches and at the same time, they made new friends! All in all, the RPWST girls managed to learn basic skills such as dribbling, ball control, shooting and also played in small sided games such as 1v1 and 6v6 under the scorching sun, which resulted in the girls bringing home some tan-lines on their thighs and arms.

Needless to say, it was a great opportunity given to the team! Who would miss such a golden opportunity like this?

Thank you FAS for organizing this Soccer Programme and Thank You to the U.S. Embassy for arranging and bringing in Janine Szpara, Anna Shortt, Karen Willoughby and Val Henderson to conduct a great clinic for us all, the girls definitely had an unforgettable time!

Check out some photos below:

That GOLD!

The POL-ITE Women's Soccer '2012 has come to an end and needless to say, it has been a great tournament for the team as for the very first time, they finished as Champions! We have Raudha, who shares with us the about the entire POL-ITE 2012 experience and the matches.

Words by Raudha
Being part of the POL-ITE school team has really taught me a lot of things, from the beginning till the end. It mainly taught me not to give up easily and to fight till the end in order to reach our goals. Working hard together as a team and encouraging one another are the key points that made us stronger as a team and brought us closer to one another as teammates. On top of that, setting the right mentality before each game is the most important factor. Without the right mentality, we would not have been able to perform well.

For our first match against NYP, we defeated them 6-1. This was definitely a good start as it brought up the team moral and gave us the drive to continue fighting hard. I can see the team spirit growing and I am definitely proud of everyone’s performance on that day.

For our second match against SP, we had another victory in the bag and won the match 5-0. Although the game was not as lively as the first match, we continued to work hard to earn as many goals as we can.

For our third match against ITE, I thought that this game was the toughest and most challenging, as ITE has always been a good and strong team. Honestly when I heard that they trashed SP 9-0, it somehow made me more nervous for the team. This was not the reason for us to give up but it was actually the time to show people that we can do it. With the aggressiveness, hard work and not forgetting, the right mentality, we managed to overcome them with the score of 2-1. It was really a tough fight but at the same time, it was satisfying to overcome this challenge.

For our fourth match, it was against TP. We worked really hard for this match and played hard to win this match as it brought us one step closer in becoming the Champion. We managed to beat them 3-0 and I couldn’t describe how happy I was at that moment. Seeing the seniors’ eyes filled with tears of joy, I was really overjoyed and that was one of the happiest moments.

Our last game with NP was unfortunately as we were beaten with the score of 2-0. It was disappointing as I felt that the team could have done better than that but nevertheless, I believed that the team had put effort in this.

To sum it all up, I am proud of each and everyone in the team. With blood, sweat and tears, we have proved others and naysayers wrong in becoming the Champions for the first time. I hope we can remain as Champions through working hard and never giving up. I also believe that we can go far and gain recognition with pride.

That's alot of views!

This post is of non-soccer relevance but the fact that our blog has a high of 7,770 page views in total (oh yes, you can buy 4D with that) since this blog was born, is just incredible. Blogger has broken down the figures and we have a total of 52 page viewers from 3 countries:

  • Singapore / 45 page views
  • United States / 6 page views
  • Philippines / 1 page views

Well, technically it is only 2 countries. However, it is also nice to have international people viewing or chancing upon this blog and finding out about our team in this little tiny island in Asia called Singapore!

Nonetheless, thank you for coming to visit our blog to check on updates, though we hardly have any photos for you (we apologize for that)! Well, with that said, do check back our blog for updates once in a while and leave your comments or feedback at the end of the entry if you have something to say!

POL-ITE Games 2012!

Here we are again, at the Tournament that is held annually. Yes, POL-ITE Games, that is!

This year, the matches are played over a few venues and across the various polytechnics, unlike last year where all the matches were played in RP. If you have been following our twitter, you would have read all the updates of the scores. Apologies that we are unable to bring you plenty of photos from the match.

Anyway!

3 matches have been played and RPWST have collected all 9 points from it! Below is a summary of the matches:

  • First match against Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) was a victory of 6-1 with a hat-trick from National player, Ernie, a double from Emiliah and a goal from Yun Ting.

  • Second match against Singapore Polytechnic (SP) was also a victory of 5-0 with another hat-trick from Ernie and 2 goals from Farhana.

  • The recent third match against reigning Champions, Combined Institute Technical Education (ITE), was a close 2-1 win with goals from Farhana and Shank (penalty). This match was definitely hard to watch with a 1-1 scoreline with 15 minutes before the final whistle. However, with a mere 5 minutes remaining, RPWST was awarded a penalty and Shank ensured another 3 points by scoring from the spot!

3 matches, 9 points with a total of 12 goals scored and 2 goals conceded.

Next match would be against the newcomers of the tournament (in this sport discipline), Temasek Polytechnic (TP). Match kicks off at 6pm on home soil at the Home of Team Republic! Will it be a fourth straight win for RPWST? Be there at the Home of the Republic tomorrow, 6pm to catch all the exciting action to find out!

Kuala Lumpur!

In the recent trip to KL, we have our player, Samira, who shares about the trip...

------------

Words by Samira Filzah Bte Kamal

We headed to Kuala Lumpur where we spent 5 days 4 nights. We left at 7am on 13 Sept and returned on 17 September, reaching back approximately 7pm.

A match against the Malaysia Under-16 Team was planned ahead for us on the same day we arrived at Kuala Lumpur. Lacking of motivation and perseverance, we lost 1-4. During the match debrief, team communication and confidence were covered. The next day, we drew 0-0 in our second match against the Malaysia's Under-18 Team with better team confidence. We were rewarded with a night at the pool, led by our medic, Fifi, however, the pool session was short-lived as our noise level were intolerable and we were instructed to leave the premises.

An invitation to a carnival, hosted by SMK Taman Tuanku Jaafar, occupied our weekends. We were separated into 2 teams - Dream Team and Dreaming Team. The scores of 1-1 and 1-3 from each team left Coach Arasu disappointed as it showed an inconsistency performance.

On the 4th day, we had a team bonding event whereby we challenged ourselves and our fear of heights (for some of us) in high elements consisting of flying fox, abseiling and rock climbing. It was indeed a good experience for us all, despite some of us taking more than 20 minutes to complete one obstacle! At the end of the day, everyone pushed themselves and did more than they could, with motivations and cheers from the team. The high elements were definitely a Challenge By Choice, as mentioned by the instructor himself.

One of us at scaling the high elements
The 4th day ended with given free time to roam and shop! It was the only time where we could let our hair down and not think about soccer. After 3 hours, everyone returned with countless purchases in our hands, burning a big hole in our pockets!

On the last day, we traveled to International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) for our last match. Despite our early lead early in the game, we didn't manage to win the match as ISKL equalized in the last minute. It was a tough match and it was definitely not a score that we had envisioned. After 4 days in KL, it was time to return home but before we went our separate ways, we had a team dinner.

All in all, the time spent together during the trip could not be more memorable and if you think we are separable, we are not!
------------

Oh and on the second recovery session at the pool, the team were not chased to leave the pool! Well, because they all lowered their volume...
